Two Mon Valley girls stuck out the heat Thursday, offering residents a chance to cool down while supporting a good cause.
Mia Wilson, 9, of Carroll Township and Gianna Daube, 10, of Monongahela, sold fresh lemonade to area residents to benefit their local police departments.
Mia’s mother, Lisa, said her daughter wanted to know why people don’t seem very happy with police officers.
“She asked me the other day, with everything going on, why people don’t like the police,” her mother said. “That is a touchy subject, but I tried my best to explain it to her and she decided she wanted to donate money to the police department.”
Mia, who barrel races horses, won a competition Wednesday and started the donation drive with the money from her winnings.
On Thursday, she and her friend Gianna set up a lemonade stand in hopes of generating more money for police.
Carroll Township Police Chief Paul Brand heard about the lemonade stand and decided to stop by with some fellow officers to thank the girls in person.
Brand said he often hears residents complain about younger generations, but Mia and Gianna don’t fit that mold.
“What’s wrong with kids today?” Brand said. “These are words I hear all too often.
“I wanted to praise Mia and Gianna for their kindness and generosity for having a lemonade stand with the goal of raising money to support their local police officers.”
