Today’s firefighters have access to modern, cutting-edge technology and equipment that require hours of training and preparation.
But for those interested in seeing how firefighters extinguished blazes and operated fire trucks from the past, the second annual Tri-State Antique Fire Engine Association’s Fire Muster and Firematic Flea Market will be an eye-opening experience.
The event will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 9 at the Monongahela Noble J. Dick Aquatorium.
The day will feature a children’s obstacle course with kids operating fire hoses while carrying a stuffed bear to safety, with ice cream from Sweets By Mrs. C for the winner. There will also be a DJ, a memorial service for all fallen firefighters from the previous year, a flea market with antique fire gear, helmets and hoses, vintage fire trucks on display and cookouts by Donora and Carroll Township fire departments with the Monongahela fire department providing cold beverages.
But according to TSAFEA president Tom Fronzaglio, the main attraction for the event is the pumping contest where firetrucks draft — the process of getting water when no hydrants are available — from the Monongahela River.
“It’s something neat to see,” Fronzaglio said. “It’s pretty different to watch these guys do the competitions.”
