Lee Supply settles down, stifles Edward Jones’ playoff hopes

Lee Supply used a second half offensive onslaught to capture a convincing 63-41 victory over Edward Jones at Marx’s Court Time Sports Center in Elizabeth Township Monday night.

After taking a slim three-point lead into halftime, Lee Supply (4-3) outscored its opponent, 36-17, in the final 16 minutes, taking over sole possession of third place in the Mon Valley Independent Summer Basketball League girls division standings in the process.

“That second half was huge. I just told them to settle down in there and once we were able to go on those runs, it gave the girls confidence shooting the ball,” Lee Supply coach Kaitlyn Slagus said. “They are all capable shooters, so for them to all see the ball go through the hoop like that, I think it was good.”

Lee Supply used a pair of significant runs to extend its lead in the second half.

Slagus’ bunch held on to a 30-28 lead two and a half minutes into the second half before a layup by Belle Vernon Area’s Jenna Dawson was followed up by buckets inside from Ringgold’s Abbey Whaley and Thomas Jefferson’s Graci Fairman.

The short 6-0 spurt, which gave Lee Supply a 36-28 edge, was countered by a layup by Canon-McMillan’s Tori Weselowski.

The six-point differential Edward Jones (2-4) cut it down to was the closest they would get for the remainder of the contest as a 2 for 2 showing from the free throw line by Fairman kickstarted a 13-2 run over the next three minutes, giving Lee Supply a comfortable 49-32 lead.
