Charleroi awards garbage contract

After three separate meetings, Charleroi Borough Council has decided Big’s Sanitation will remain the borough’s garbage collector, even though the company wasn’t the lowest bidder for the contract.

Charleroi, which started using Big’s Sanitation in 2017, awarded the company a three-year contract that expires Aug. 7.

The borough first discussed the contract during a July 8 meeting when bids from two companies were unsealed.

Big’s submitted a bid putting customers’ yearly bills at $147, with an option for a two-year extension at the same rate.

Westmoreland Sanitary Landfill submitted the other bid for $132.60 annually, which also included two options for extensions.

During the July 8 meeting, council agreed in a roll-call vote to award the contract to Westmoreland Sanitary Landfill, pending solicitor approval.

Council President Mark Alterici, Vice President Jerry Jericho and council members Jeannine Motycki, Heidi Cramer and Jody Cheplic voted in favor of Westmoreland. Frank Paterra and Nancy Ellis voted for Big’s.

The meeting was recessed until July 15 when concerns were raised involving the companies’ standing and service.
