The canopy at Marion Elementary School collapsed Tuesday afternoon as a strong storm moved through the area.
Jason Zadrozny, building and grounds director in the Belle Vernon Area School District, said the canopy was constructed in 2003 and cost $71,000 to install. It’s not certain if repairs can be made prior to the start of school.
District Superintendent Dr. Michele Dowell said no one was injured when the canopy was knocked over, and the loss will be submitted to the district’s insurance company.
The board held executive sessions before and after Tuesday’s work session to discuss personnel and the district’s health and safety plan as it relates to the reopening of school.
Dowell said she will outline the plan publicly before the school board votes on it Monday.
The board will also consider a resolution for the duration of the pandemic, but for no longer than four years, that would allow the district to utilize a variety of learning modes to complete the 180 days/990 hours of education required by the state.
The resolution would comply with a change in state education guidelines that now permit districts to use distance learning, virtual education and in-person classes to complete the requirement.
