Monessen council clashes over spending

The City of Monessen will soon have a new website, but some council members say the work was contracted out and paid for without their knowledge.

At last week’s meeting, council finance Chairman Gil Coles requested a motion to approve payment of $427,779 in invoices from the general fund.

Councilman Tony Orzechowski highlighted two expenditures, asking why they’d been made without council’s knowledge or approval.

The first was a bill for $1,793 for the U.S. Conference of Mayors, which Mayor Matt Shorraw said is an organization that provides grant opportunities.

“I’m actually writing a grant with them right now,” Shorraw said.

When Orzechowski asked where the money was coming from to cover the $1,793 cost, Shorraw said, “I will send you the information.”

Orzechowski asked if it was something that had already been done and Shorraw said it was done June 9.

Orzechowski also questioned a $6,400 expenditure to a company called Sparq Designs.
