Sophia E. Evancho, 99, formerly of Monessen, died Wednesday, July 15, 2020, in Townview Health and Rehabilitation Center, Canonsburg. She was born on Jan. 3, 1921, in New York, N.Y., the daughter of the late John Evancho Sr. and Sophia Biszaha Evancho. Ms. Evancho was a 1939 graduate of Monessen High School and retired from Monongahela Valley Hospital Inc., having worked as a supervisor in the histology lab. She was an active member of St. Mary’s Byzantine Catholic Church. She is survived by a brother, Michael Evancho of Mogodore, Ohio; and by several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, John and William C. “Chase” Evancho; and by a sister, Anna Zelenak. Private visitation was held followed by Divine Liturgy in St. Mary’s Byzantine Catholic Church, Monessen, with the Rev. Stephen Wahal officiating. Interment followed in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Rostraver Township. Arrangements entrusted to DALFONSO-BILLICK FUNERAL HOME INC. & CREMATION SERVICES, 441 Reed Ave., Monessen.
