Rostraver Twp. recycling will resume in August

Rostraver Township’s electronic recycling program will resume next month.

In past years, residents dropped off unwanted recyclables, but items will be picked up curbside at individual residences this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Each household in the township can have up to three electronic items picked up by the township street department.

Items can include televisions, microwaves, printers, electric typewriters, copiers, fax/copy machines/CPUs/towers, laptops, computer monitors-CRT and LED/LCD, mice, keyboards and speakers.

Household hazardous waste, appliances and tires will not be accepted.

Items must be placed outside for pick-up by 6 a.m. on dates that coincide with their garbage pick-up date: Aug. 17-18 and Aug. 26-28.

Chairman John Lorenzo said the program, operated  through a partnership with Big’s Sanitation, has been successful in the township for the last five years.

Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, commissioners wanted to continue the program for residents.

“Instead of having residents drop off their items and having our crew assist them in loading them into the dumpsters, our guys will go around and pick everything up,” Lorenzo said.

Even as the pandemic subsides, Lorenzo said pick-up will likely be the new norm.

“I think the curbside pick-up is great,” Lorenzo said. “Even after coronavirus I think this is something we are going to stick with. It is a common courtesy and a nice service to offer our residents.”
