The COVID-19 pandemic won’t stop the RESA Regional Police Department from hosting its only annual fundraiser.
The police department will hold its 15th annual car show at 11 a.m. Sunday at the Stockdale Volunteer Fire Department.
Police board member JJ Cullen said car shows adhere to social distancing requirements without much effort.
“We have been joking about it for the past few weeks,” Cullen said. “Car shows are typically pretty spaced out because no one wants to get a ding in their door.”
Under current restrictions, masks should be worn in public spaces, which includes outdoors if social distancing cannot be observed.
Cullen said volunteers will wear masks during the event and they are recommended, but not required, for the public.
“Being that this is outside, there are a lot less restrictions,” Cullen said. “Things would be different if this was an indoor fundraiser.”
Cullen said the fundraiser brings in about $4,000 annually for the part-time department to purchase necessary equipment.
In past years, it has been used to buy Tasers and bulletproof vests for officers.
“Being that we are a part-time department, this helps us buy the things we need to keep our officers safe and keeps taxes low in the communities we serve,” he said.
All six police officers will attend the event Sunday to mingle with the community, but they’ll also be busy on the grill. The officers make the food for the event each year.
This year they will prepare hot dogs, hamburgers, baked beans and pulled pork sandwiches.
Members of the Stockdale Volunteer Fire Department participate in the event each year and donate space, tables and chairs.
Admission is free for the public and costs $5 to register each classic or modern car, pick-up truck or motorcycle. Dash plaques will be given to the first 100 vehicles.
