Charleroi Area students will head back to the classroom next month.

Superintendent Dr. Ed Zelich announced a preliminary reopening plan for students Monday — with all students in K-12 set to have a full in-person school week.

Zelich said while the plan will not be finalized until the July 21 school board meeting, the district has worked to make sure students can return to class safely.

“It has been a lot of hard work and there is a long way to go,” he said. “The safety of our students and staff is our top priority.”

School will resume as originally scheduled Aug. 27 for all students.

If Washington County remains in the green or yellow phase of the state’s reopening plan, classes will be taught in person.

Students in grades K-5 will begin their day at 10 a.m. with dismissal at 3:20 p.m.

Those in grades 6-12 will start school at 8:33 a.m. with dismissal at 2:16 p.m.

Zelich said the preliminary plan was based on survey results sent out to district parents last month.

“We received responses from the parents of over 800 students in less than 48 hours, with 86% of respondents indicating support for having all children come back full time,” Zelich said. “We will continue to review your responses as we finalize reopening plans, and the results of the parent, student and teacher surveys will be placed on the district website.”
