In honor of the Washington County Community Foundation’s silver anniversary, 25 non-profit organizations throughout the region have been designated as charities of excellence.

The honorees were announced by video last week.

The WCCF promotes and facilitates local philanthropy, including an annual day of giving that supports 100 charities and a broad grant-making program and online database of charities in Washington County.

In total, the WCCF will distribute $150,000 to local charities through this special silver grant cycle, made possible by the Alvin and Carol Berthold Fund.

Lifelong residents of McDonald, the Bertholds were longtime supporters of the WCCF.

Their fund, valued at more than $5 million, is the largest discretionary grant-making fund of the WCCF.

Five honorees are based in the Mon Valley and serve the local area:

• The Donora Public Library Association, which served more than 9,700 people in the boroughs of Donora and Finleyville as well as the townships of Carroll, Nottingham and Union and other Mon Valley communities with print and electronic resources and education programming.

• Meals on Wheels at the Crossroads, which prepares and delivers nutritious meals to senior citizens and others in special needs situations in Eighty Four, the Meadowlands through Finleyville, Canonsburg, Houston, Muse and parts of Bridgeville/South Fayette. More than 30,000 meals were provided by the program in 2019.

• The Mon Valley YMCA in Carroll Township provides family programming that gives people a place to play, learn, be healthy, eat well and give back. As of December of 2019, the YMCA had 7,145 members, and 165 children were served by its child care department.

• The Mon Valley Youth and Teen Association offers programs, activities and services to children and adults in the surrounding communities that provide and promote education, self-esteem and responsibility. The organization served 3,246 people in 2019.

• Mon-Vale Health Resources, Inc./Monongahela Valley Hospital, based in Carroll Township, has a mission to enhance the health of the residents of the Mid-Mon Valley area. The Mon Vale Health Resources system has more than 40 specialties, servicing a wide range of needs for patients and community members.
