Joseph George Sabol – Donora
Joseph George Sabol, 97, of Donora, passed away Tuesday, June 30, 2020, at Monongahela Valley Hospital in Carroll Township. He was born in Donora on Feb. 17, 1923, and was the son of the late Andrew and Veronica Mihalek Sabol. Joe was a member of St. Andrew the Apostle Parish, the First Catholic Slovak Union (Jednota), the Confraternity of the Most Holy Rosary, Donora American Legion Post No. 212 and St. Dominic’s Men’s Club. He served as an ammunition NCO in the Army during World War II and was responsible for the ammunition supply for the 90 MM anti-aircraft guns. He was a faithful usher at St. Dominic’s Church for many years. He was also a member of the Jednota bowling league for 30 years. where he met his wife, Betty. He enjoyed duckpin bowling at the Croatian Club and golfing upon his retirement from the U.S. Steel Duquesne Works. He also volunteered with Meals on Wheels in Donora. Joe loved watching sports on television and was an avid Pittsburgh Steelers fan, a loyal Notre Dame fan, as well as a dedicated St. Louis Cardinals fan. Joe’s warm and good-humored personality was noticed by all and will be terribly missed by his family, many friends and good neighbors. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth Jane Saxon Sabol; five sisters, Elizabeth George, Margaret Sabol, Mildred Roman, Cecelia Koskoski and Vera Bolchak; four brothers, Andrew, John, George and Thomas Sabol; and five infant siblings. Surviving to cherish his memory are his three daughters, Joyce (William) Kopanic of Donora, Nancy (Martin) Jespersen of Rostraver Township and Mary (Aaron) Brooks of Dumfries, Va.; a son, Thomas (Deborah) Sabol of Carroll Township; five grandchildren, Nicholas (Alaina Ribnicky) and Joseph (Hailey Faulk) Kopanic, Alyssa Jespersen, Courtney Brooks (Jacob Malmsten) and Jessica (Josh) Maher; two great-grandchildren, Jackson and Jordan; and numerous nieces and nephews, including two special nieces, Donna and Cheryl Koskoski of Donora. Arrangements have been entrusted to ANTHONY L. MASSAFRA FUNERAL HOME AND CREMATION SERVICE INC., 40 Second St. Ext., Donora, PA 15033, 724-379-6900, where the family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, July 5, 2020. Prayers will be recited in the funeral home at 9:30 a.m. Monday, July 6, 2020, followed by a Mass of Christian burial at St. Andrew the Apostle Parish, Donora campus, at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Father Kevin Dominik celebrating. Interment will follow in St. Dominic Cemetery, Donora. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to St. Andrew the Apostle Parish, 1 Park Manor Road, Donora, PA 15033. In order to be compliant with the new “norm” of Covid-19 restrictions, attendance will be limited to 50 people at any given time inside the funeral home. Guests are asked to obey social distancing guidelines and personal protection guidelines, which include masks within the funeral home.
