U.S. Steel and members of Clairton’s American Legion joined forces the year the Vietnam War ended to plan and design a new veterans memorial in the city.

The group celebrated patriotism, the sacrifice of all United States veterans and the birth of the nation’s freedom by dedicating the monument on Independence Day 1976.

This Fourth of July, current members of Daniel Keffer American Legion Post 75 of Clairton are feeling a similar pride as the Legion members 44 years ago.

Members of Post 75 in recent history noticed the bronze plaques on the front and back of the memorial were in need of replacement.

Recalling the partnership American Legion Post 75 and U.S. Steel once undertook to have the memorial built, Cmdr. Bob Haramia reached out to Allegheny County District 6 Councilman John Palmiere to see if he could facilitate a conversation with U.S. Steel about helping to have the plaques rejuvenated.
