Two games into the Mon Valley Independent Senior Swing, Perryopolis softball skipper Don Hartman’s team is right where he wants them.
A perfect 2-0.
Another dazzling performance by hurler Logan Hartman helped carry the advantageous Commodores to a 9-0 win over Falcons Fast Pitch in six innings at Washington Township to move her team to 2-0 in the Blue Division. The game was called due to the 1 hour, 20 minute time limit.
Logan Hartman fired another no-hitter, her second in as many days. She’s yet to allow a hit in the tournament.
“It’s even more special to see her throw another no-hitter, but it’s even more special to have the other daughter catching it,” Don Hartman said. He was referring to Jensyn Hartman, who started at catcher.
Logan Hartman struck out 12 Falcons’ batters.
The Perryopolis offense wasted no time taking advantage of a couple of Falcon errors in the bottom of the first.
Emi Curcio knocked in Logan Hartman with a sharp single to right. Falcon FP right fielder let the ball skip past her for an error, allowing Jensyn Hartman to score and Curcio to end up on second to make it 2-0.
Rylee Evans followed with an RBI single to center to up the lead to three. She came in to score on an error on the infield and Mackenzie Kelly added another RBI single to score Delaney Warnick and make it 5-0 after one.
Jensyn Hartman finished the game with two RBIs and Curcio and Evans each added two hits and knocked in a run.
“I’m really pleased with the play of our young players today,” Don Hartman said. “We knew heading into the season they were going to have to come in and play a big role. While we didn’t have a season, they’ve really come into this tournament and done exactly what we’ve needed them to do.”
The Commodores added another run in the second with Curcio singling in Logan Hartman. In the third, they added three more with Tori Washinski starting things off with a hard double to right-center field. After Falcons FP pitcher Kendra Franks walked the bases loaded, she walked Logan Hartman to score a run and Jensyn Hartman followed with a two-run single.
“We have a young team and a pitcher that’s only going to be a freshman next year. We battled against the defending state champions. I’m really proud of my team’s effort,” Falcons FP coach Jane Bock said. “I saw a lot of determination and I saw a lot of good swings against a top-notch pitcher. You have to give it up to her, we don’t see a lot of pitchers as savvy.
“But we had some young girls come up and play for us and I think there was a little intimidation there. I’m really happy with how my core group worked.”
Perryopolis (2-0) clinched the No. 1 seed from the Blue Division with the win. They’ll face Ringgold Fast Pitch Jrs. to wrap up round-robin play.
“We really try to take advantage of the other team’s mistakes. That’s our mindset. We want to be aggressive and attack the bases,” Don Hartman said. “I always tell my team there’s 27 ways to score from third base. Our goal is to get there by playing situational ball. Our girls are so unselfish.”
Hartman said he’s never going to forget his two girls making up the battery for a no-hitter. And he’s just glad to see his team out there having fun.
“I’m just proud that they’re out there on the field together again.”
Cal Impulse 11,
Rams FP Jrs. 1
Cal Impulse head coach David Young picked up his first win with his team after a lopsided win over Rams Fast Pitch Juniors at Washington Township.
With the win, Cal Impulse moves to 1-1 in Blue Division play. They’ll face Falcons FP with the No. 2 seed from the division on the line for the Senior Swing playoffs.
Britney Bevan pitched a gem for Cal, allowing only one hit and striking out six in the five-inning contest.
Marlee Renner and Ashley Gush each had a pair of doubles for Cal Impulse.
Rams FP Jrs. (0-2) will face a tough task, facing Perryopolis Tuesday back at the Washington Township complex.
