Despite the coronavirus pandemic, Pleasant Hills plans to move forward with its 26th annual National Night Out, scheduled for 7 to 8:30 p.m. July 28.

The borough typically holds the event on the last Tuesday of July, with the rest of the country holding the same event during early August, although the National Night Out website recommends communities hold the event Oct. 6 due to COVID-19.

“We’ve always held ours earlier than everybody else so there’s less of a conflict and there’s a bigger turnout,” said Pleasant Hills Mayor William Trimbath. “Although with the coronavirus, everything we’re doing this year, from Community Day to National Night Out, is flexible.”

National Night Out is a nationwide crime and drug prevention event. Emergency equipment from numerous public safety organizations will form a procession and travel throughout the borough in an effort to highlight the importance of a strong police-community partnership.

Residents are invited to join in the celebration with police, fire and medics by turning on their lights, locking their doors and coming outside to enjoy the parade.

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, Pleasant Hills officials are not encouraging block parties.

If residents are having a block party this year, Pleasant Hills police say they will not attend.
