Jack C. Sutherland, 94, of Speers Hill, went to be with the Lord on Monday, June 22, 2020. A son of the late Alexander and Sylvia Gaskill Sutherland, he was born in Speers on Jan. 29, 1926. A lifelong resident of Speers Hill, Jack was a U.S. Army veteran, serving in World War II. He was employed at the Monessen plant of Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel, was a co-owner of R&S Esso station on First Street in Charleroi and was the owner of the former Texaco station on Route 51. Jack was handy at radio and TV repairs, loved turkey hunting, fishing, archery and watching dog races in Wheeling. He was also a member of the Speers Golf League for many years. He played professional baseball in the minor leagues with the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Red Sox. His longest stint was in Rehoboth Beach, Del., and his career lasted several years before and after the war. He is survived by a sister and brother in-law, Joyce and Ronald Danko of Monessen; and nieces and nephews, Ronnie Danko of Monessen, Darren Danko of Monaca, Barb Yuss of Peters Township, Terri (Darrell) Shannon of Speers Hill, Alan (Lauren) Sutherland of Lecanto, Fla., and Randy (Lynn) Rossi of Monroeville. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Doris Sutherland and Adele Rossi; and two brothers, George Sutherland and Jay Sutherland. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, June 25, at FERGUSON FUNERAL HOME AND CREMATORY INC., 700 Broad Ave., Belle Vernon, 724-929-5300, www.FergusonFuneralHomeandCrematory.com. Face masks are required in the funeral home. Funeral services will be held in the funeral home at 10 a.m. Friday, June 26, with Darrell Shannon officiating. Interment will follow in Belle Vernon Cemetery.
