As is the case for high school seniors across the country, McKeesport Area High School’s Class of 2020 will participate in a non-traditional graduation ceremony this year.
The seniors will be the first in the district’s history to participate in a drive-thru graduation ceremony.
McKeesport Area School District announced that in order to “abide by” regulations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and state Department of Education, MASD “will continue to honor safe social distancing ensuring the health and safety of others” for this year’s ceremony.
“We recognize that this may not be the graduation ceremony you expected, but we hope that it is one that you remember and cherish,” the district said in a letter to seniors.
The ceremony will be held June 30 on the high school campus. The district planned to hold graduation at 6:30 p.m., but high school administrators are currently re-evaluating the time and may announce later this week that the ceremony will begin at an earlier time.
The high school/Founder’s Hall/stadium campus will be closed to visitors beginning at 3 p.m. June 30 to prepare for the evening’s events and for safety and security.
Students are permitted to have guests in the vehicle they arrive in. But, student guests are not permitted to attend the event in a separate vehicle. There will be one reserved parking spot per student at Weigle-Schaffer Stadium’s parking lot. Attendees are not permitted to arrive in limousines, party buses or ride shares.
