BVA to consider policy on sports

The Belle Vernon Area School Board is beginning to review plans for restarting sports, extracurricular activities and the fall semester.

The board will address its athletic “resocialization” policy, a 14-page document, at its business meeting Monday. It was discussed briefly at Tuesday evening’s agenda meeting.

“One of the things we have to note here is Gov. Wolf’s administrative guidelines were very general. Each district must develop a plan to be approved by the board,” said school Director Dan Kovatch.

Kovatch said the district’s athletic director has met with other athletic directors in the area so all the districts are working from the same plan.

“We want to get all of our athletics back on track,” Kovatch said.

The detailed plan will be posted on the district website, though it must still be reviewed by district medical personnel and some changes are anticipated.

“I don’t know how, with football, you tackle somebody and keep social distancing, or be on the sidelines or in a huddle,” said school Director Joel Whiteko.

Kovatch said the plan deals with teaching concepts as well as modifying practice techniques.

“This is a well-thought-out plan. We need to make sure it is carried out,” said Joe Grata, the school board president.
