Family and friends of the late Aaliyah Denise Johnson are planning a peaceful vigil and demonstration in McKeesport today to remember her life and to demand answers from police about how she died.
In various social media posts, those advocating for the rally and encouraging others to attend have alleged Allegheny County police have not given “accurate answers” about how Johnson, a black transgender woman, died.
Johnson — a 32-year-old McKeesport resident, hair stylist, dancer/entertainer and ballroom scene emcee —was pronounced dead at the scene May 26 after her body was found on the sidewalk in the 500 block of Sinclair Street.
The Allegheny County Medical Examiner’s Office on Thursday said a cause and manner for Johnson’s death are still pending.
ACPD Inspector Michael Peairs, via an email to the Mon Valley Independent Thursday, said ACPD is “not providing any details about open and active investigations.”
