Some clubs, veterans’ groups are struggling to hang on

The COVID-19 pandemic put a strain on membership-based philanthropic and veterans’ organizations, but leaders are hopeful now that Southwestern Pennsylvania is in the green phase.
Organizations such as the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Moose International and The Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks had to lock the doors to their clubs for nearly three months.
While many local chapters offer a place to socialize, have a drink or grab some food, they are about more than just a fun night out for members.
The groups provide resources, career opportunities, medical aid and scholarships to people in the communities they serve.
The American Legion, chartered in 1919, offers a variety of services to veterans and their families as well as educational, career opportunities and scholarships for students.
