As poll workers open voting booths early today, many counties are preparing for a different-looking primary election.
With the coronavirus pandemic causing precincts to relocate polling places, new voting machines being used to improve security and the state now accepting mail-in ballots, many counties are taking extra steps to make the process as smooth as possible.
In Allegheny County’s 18th Congressional District race, incumbent Mike Doyle faces challenger Jerry Dickinson for a chance to represent the Democratic party in the Nov. 3 general election.
The race for the District 49 Republican seat in Fayette and Washington counties features incumbent Bud Cook being challenged by Tony Bottino Jr., and in District 39, incumbent Michael Puskaric faces off against Tom Kirsch to be on the Republican ballot in November.
In all counties, polls open at 7 a.m. and close at 8 p.m.
“It’s phenomenal the amount of mail-in ballots we’ve received,” said Larry Blosser, Fayette County’s director of elections. “We’ve received over 12,000 mail-in ballots. The highest we’ve had in the past is 2,000.”
