A resident of Tyrol Boulevard in Rostraver Township is circulating a petition in an effort to stop a leachate evaporation system from being installed at the Westmoreland Sanitary Landfill.
Jim Sepesky was moved to develop the petition after reading recent newspaper accounts about the proposed evaporation system, which is in the air quality permit phase with the state Department of Environmental Protection. The public comment period for that permit ends June 9.
“I’ve printed out petitions that would cover 200 people,” Sepesky said, “and if I have to print out more copies, I’ll definitely do that, so I can get as many as possible in the next four or five days so I can get it in the mail in time to reach them by the ninth.”
Sepesky intends to send copies of the petition to state lawmakers representing the area. Sepesky said he was alarmed by what he read in articles regarding the proposal for dealing with the leachate.
“Mainly it’s health concerns. They’re talking about radioactive materials being released into the air,” Sepesky said.
