Charles H. Matava – Charleroi

Charles H. Matava, 69, of Charleroi, passed away unexpectedly on May 21, 2020. He was born on March 8, 1951, in North Charleroi, son of the late Andrew and Mary Vanascotte Matava. Chuck graduated from Charleroi High School, Class of 1971, and continued his education at Dean Institute of Technology. He served his country honorably at Lockport Air Force Station, serving as a sergeant in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War. While enlisted, Chuck married the love of his life, Mary Hlavacik, and the two lived together during his service in the Niagara Falls area. He was a member of Saint Andrew the Apostle church, Charleroi site, a lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans organization and a member of the Glass Workers Union. For 40-plus years, Chuck worked as a journeyman/maintenance mechanic at Corning/World Kitchen/Corelle Brands. Charles is survived by his wife of 46 years, Mary Hlavacik Matava; sons, C. Ryan Matava of Charleroi and Christopher (June) Matava of Donora; brother, Andrew Matava of Washington state; sister, Madeline (Harry, deceased) Lake of Mc-Keesport; grandchildren, Crystal and Faith Matava; mother-in-law, Irene (Stephen, deceased) Hlavacik of North Charleroi; brothers-in-law, Stephen Hlavacik of York, Pa., and Joseph (Annamarie, deceased) Hlavacik of Redding, Calif.; sisters-in-law, Mara (David Howard, deceased) Hlavacik of Bethel Park, Marci (Eric, deceased) Leech of Peters Township; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Chuck was preceded in death by his daughter-in-law, Elise Kravets Matava. Services will be private for the immediate family only. Interment will occur at Calvary Cemetery in Charleroi. Arrangements were entrusted to SCHROCK-HOGAN FUNERAL HOME & CREMATION SERVICES INC.
