Darwin R. Manges Sr., 77, of Monongahela, died unexpectedly Saturday, May 23, 2020, at Monongahela Valley Hospital. He was born Jan. 12, 1943, in Lambert, Pa., son of John Eldred and Pauline Semosky Manges. Darwin was a 1961 graduate of Monongahela High School. Later in life he obtained his nursing certification from Community College of Allegheny County, where he was inducted into the national honor fraternity Phi Beta Kappa. He served our country during the Vietnam War in the U.S. Navy, holding the rank of hospital corpsman first class. His employment career included being a salesman for Sears, Roebuck and Co. and a healthcare professional, working for a private agency and as an administrator in a nursing home. Darwin’s greatest job was being a devoted father. He was a member of St. Andrew the Apostle Parish and Henry M. Phillips Lodge 337 F&AM, both in Monongahela. He coached youth baseball and football in Monongahela for many years and especially enjoyed camping with his wife and children. Darwin was a Washington County humane officer, mandated to cross report animal cruelty and child abuse. He is survived by his wife and high school sweetheart, Susan Fisher Manges, with whom he celebrated 54 years of marriage on July 8, 2019; three sons and a daughter, Darwin R. Manges Jr. and wife Ashley of Monongahela, Valerie J. Buraczewski and husband Mark of Monongahela, Steven P. Manges and significant other Sonya Pollack of Eighty Four, and John Edward Manges and fiancée Anita Laughlin of Elizabeth; five grandchildren, Courtney Chettle and husband George, Darien Manges, John Parker Manges, Gavin Ray Manges and Steven P. Manges II; two step-grandchildren, Callie and Brystol Bowden; brother, James L. Manges and wife Grace of Donora; two sisters, Lois Thomas of Florida and Carolyn Pavlisak of Monongahela; two brothers-in-law, Tom Fisher and wife Joan, and John Fisher and wife Diana, all of Florida; two sisters-in-law, Janet Fassbach and husband Jim of Finleyville, and Linda Beattie and husband Jim of Monongahela; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, John E. Manges and wife Rosalie; two brothers-in-law, Frank Pavlisak and Frank Barton; father and mother-in-law, Eugene “Duke” and Ruth Snodgrass Fisher; sister-in-law, Sally Power and husband Jerry; and a nephew, David “Boo Boo” Sadler. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, May 27, 2020, at FRYE FUNERAL HOME INC., 427 W. Main St., Monongahela. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, May 28, 2020, at St. Andrew the Apostle Parish, Monongahela, with the Rev. Kevin Dominik as celebrant. Interment will follow in Monongahela Cemetery with military honors accorded by the Mon Valley Honor Guard and Firing Squad. In order to be compliant with our state and county guidelines, attendance will be limited to 25 people at any given time.
