Sandra Lee Ballentyne, 70, formerly of Charleroi, passed away on May 19, 2020, in Annandale, Va., after a difficult battle with Alzheimer’s disease. A Charleroi Area High School and California University of Pennsylvania graduate, Sandy spent 30 years teaching in a variety of positions in the Charleroi Area School District; in addition, she earned a Master of Business Administration from Waynesburg College toward the end of her teaching career. Upon her retirement in 2005, she moved to Seminole, Fla., where she spent her time volunteering at the James A. Haley Veterans Hospital, participating in outdoor activities with her Adventurous Women group, quilting, sewing, drawing, painting and doting on her dogs, Jordan, Murphy and Max. After her husband of 44 years, John Thomas Ballentyne, passed away in 2013, Sandra moved to Reston, Va., to be closer to her daughter. When her disease began to progress, she moved into Sunrise Assisted Living in Arlington, Va., and then into Brightview Woodburn, where she spent the last four years of her life. Sandy is survived by her daughter, Jill (Peter) Christensen and her granddaughter, Charlotte “Cece” Christensen; sister, Robin (Don) Robinson; brother, Larry (Jackie) Borne; brother-in-law, Kenneth (Sherry) Ballentyne; nephews, Marshall (Kristin) Usher and Daniel (Patricia) Ballentyne; and nieces, Becky Robinson, Mollie Borne and Amanda (Michael) Shenouda. In addition to her husband and parents, she was predeceased by a brother, Marshall “Butch” Borne and sister-in-law, Kathleen Ballentyne. A private family service will be planned for a future date. Donations in memory of Sandy may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association (https://www.alz.org/).
