The Belle Vernon Area School Board approved several contracts as part of its capital improvements plan during a special meeting Tuesday.

The largest contract was awarded to Piccolomini Contractors Inc. for paving projects at Marion Elementary, Rostraver Middle School and Belle Vernon Area High School, expanding and paving parking lots and other projects.

Four bids were submitted, with one of those withdrawn prior to the meeting. Piccolomini was determined to be the lowest responsible bidder both for the base bid and the total project.

After considerable discussion, the board voted to approve a contract totaling $500,725.

Included in that project will be paving the high school teachers’ parking lot, the Crest Avenue student lot and the Marion Elementary and Rostraver Middle School parking lots.

Additional work includes expanding the student lot by 49 parking spaces, pouring a concrete slab in front of the auditorium so students don’t have to walk on the road, constructing an access road to Sandbank Road at the middle school, adding handicapped and visitors’ parking in the circle at the high school, installing stairs behind the high school and refurbishing existing stairs in that area.
