Gill Hall VFD recertified

A Jefferson Hills volunteer fire company that sat dormant for more than a year is looking to become operational within the not too distant future.

After a virtual meeting Monday night, Jefferson Hills borough officials voted 4-3 to recertify the Gill Hall VFD, which was decertified in January of last year.

Voting yes at the meeting were president Karen Bucy, Keith Reynolds, Nicole Ruscitto and Vickie Ielase. Melissa Steffey, Francis Sockman and William Montgomery voted no on the decision.

The approval means the fire department, located at 1228 Gill Hall Road, will now receive municipal funds and field emergency calls from Allegheny County Emergency Services.

The company will be placed on a year-long probation, with an audit and a mediation occurring within the first six months of probation.

“It’s been a long-standing issue and unfortunately we needed a little bit of time, but it was always on the priority list,” said Reynolds, a long-time proponent of recertifying the fire department, after the meeting. “Fire protection was paramount. We righted an injustice.”
