First-year South Allegheny softball coach Jenn Stockett never got the chance to take the field with her Gladiators team.
The team did have a scrimmage, but never had the chance to take the field in a regular-season game, section game or a WPIAL playoff game. There’s no doubt South Allegheny had high expectations after advancing to the WPIAL quarterfinals last season.
Now, those hopes and expectations have been dashed by the COVID-19 pandemic and five Gladiator seniors had their seasons wiped out.
But Stockett and her brother, assistant coach Bryan Myers, wanted to make sure this group was never forgotten. Not forgotten for contributions already made to the program and not forgotten for what could have been an unforgettable senior season.
“It’s been very emotional,” Stockett said. “At first there was a little hope, but when it was official that the season was over, I just lost it. I couldn’t believe it.”
Once the emotions subsided, Stockett reached out to her brother.
“I told him that we needed to do something for these girls, something that we could do so everyone will always remember them,” she said.
