Remember When?: Belle Vernon Area nips Connellsville, 6-5
By THE VALLEY INDEPENDENT
It looked too easy.
There was Belle Vernon Area junior righthander Rick Mavrakis blanking highly touted Connellsville on a three-hitter with a comfortable 6-0 lead going in the final inning at Cedar Creed Park yesterday.
It didn’t end easy for the Leps or Mavrakis, however.
Connellsville came back with five runs and had the bases loaded before the struggling Mavrakis, who had walked in two tallies, fanned pinch hitter Bill O’Donnell for the last out to put the Leps in a first-place tie in Sec. 3 with idle Brownsville at 2-0, a half game ahead of the Falcons.
Why didn’t BVA coach Don Asmonga pull his pitcher after seven of Connellsville’s first eight batters reached base on either a single (four, including three straight) or base on balls (three) in the seventh?
“He was just missing a little with his pitches,” he answered. “I was a little leery about putting someone else in because all we had available were sophomores. Besides, Rick went this far and he had to have a little luck with a six-run lead.”
