Thomas Jefferson girls basketball coach Lisa Fairman had a feeling the events of Thursday were coming. But that didn’t make it hurt any less.
When the PIAA announced the winter sports championships were canceled, Fairman’s Jaguars had their season come to an end.
Thomas Jefferson (20-7) was supposed to play rival Chartiers Valley (27-0) March 14 in a PIAA quarterfinal game.
“I think the longer it went and the more the (coronavirus) cases grew in numbers, I felt it was inevitable,” Fairman said. “We were sort of hanging on to hope. I never, ever thought something like this could happen in today’s world.
“I just had this pit in my stomach when we heard the news. We battled so hard in the playoffs and no one wanted it to end. When I found out it was completely over, it was just like we lost a game. Kind of like that feeling you get in the locker room. The biggest thing is that we’re not going to get that chance again with this particular group of kids. We’re not going to have that closure.”
