United Way of Mon Valley donates to local food banks
For the MVI
United Way of Mon Valley President and CEO Phillip Sparacella announced the organization received a portion of a $3 million grant given to the United Way Worldwide COVID-19 Relief & Response Fund by Truist Foundation, which represents what was formerly Sun Trust & BB&T.
The Monessen Rostraver Rotary donated $400 so that each food bank will receive equal amounts.
Donations were designated to the Greater Westmoreland County Food Bank and The Greater Washington County Food Bank with concentration in the Mid-Mon Valley area. Each will receive $1,500.
“While we don’t know how this will all unfold, we do know it will likely get worse before it gets better,” Sparacella said. “As unemployment increases and it becomes more difficult for people to get supplies and food, we are grateful to the Truist Foundation for stepping forward in a time of need.”
Sparacella said it’s important for those who need food to call either food bank to coordinate with their distribution sites at the main facilities: Washington County at 724-632-2190 or Westmoreland County at 724-468-8660. There are also various sites throughout the Mon Valley area with distribution dates.
“These donations will make a great impact on many individuals and families in need during the COVID-19 pandemic crisis we are experiencing at this time,” Sparacella said.
Individuals can also use the United Way helpline by dialing 2-1-1 to receive information about rental and mortgage assistance, utilities, daycare and healthcare needs along with veterans services.
