A portion of state Route 906 between Monessen and Interstate 70, which has been under an emergency closure since 2 a.m. Monday as the result of a landslide, will not be reopened until Friday afternoon.
PennDOT District 12 spokeswoman Valerie Petersen earlier this week said the section of the road, which is on the Rostraver Township side of the Monongahela River, was slated to be re-opened today.
On Wednesday, she announced that “as crews started working on the slide, they found more unstable debris than expected and needed to get it stabilized,” and said Route 906 is expected to be reopened around 3 p.m. Friday.
Firefighters from both Monessen stations and Rostraver Central Fire Department early Monday morning responded to the scene of the slide, which occurred just past the Charleroi-Monessen Bridge across the river from Locks & Dam 4 and brought mud, rocks and trees down onto the road.
The landslide came as a result of heavy rainstorms that ripped through the region on Saturday and additional rain that fell and was accompanied by heavy winds on Sunday, Petersen said on Monday.
She said a marked detour is in place and that motorists are urged to use caution.
PennDOT District 11 is also dealing with a landslide in the Mon Valley.
A portion of state Route 837 in Allegheny County between Boswell Oil Company in Dravosburg and the McKeesport-Duquesne Bridge remains closed in both directions due to a landslide that brought mud and large rocks crashing onto the busy thoroughfare, which runs along the Monongahela River and connects West Mifflin, Clairton and Pleasant Hills to Dravosburg, Duquesne and the McKeesport-Duquesne Bridge.
