Robert Melvin Callahan, 95, died on March 27, 2020. He was born on May 20, 1924, in New Kensington. He was the son of the late Frank and Edith Ferguson Callahan. Robert was a staff sergeant for the United States Marine Corps. He served his country during World War II and was stationed on the Admiralty Islands in Papua, New Guinea. He fought in the Battle of Mindinao, part of Operation VICTOR V, which was the campaign to liberate the Philippines. He also fought in the Battle of Okinawa and was later stationed in China, where he worked on the return of Japanese prisoners to Japan. He enjoyed vacationing in Key West, Fla., visiting casinos, watching the sports channel with his dogs, sunbathing and cutting grass on his riding mower. He is survived by his wife, Sarah Moore Callahan; step-children, Nola (John) Barton, and James (Tia) Werner Jr., both of Johnstown, Pa.; grandchildren, Frank, Scott, Dan, Chrissy, Abbie, Brittany, Jimmy, Matt, Breanna, Justin, Timmy, Robert, Ricky and Christopher; and many great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Helen Holeva; daughters, Milveen McDoneagh and Ailyne Olszewski; and siblings, Ted, Wes, Bill, Pearl, Doris, Lester, Edward, Melvin and Yvonne. A memorial service led by Father James Bump will be announced at a later date.
