On its way to the WPIAL championship, 29 victories and the first trip in the school’s history to Hershey, Ringgold High’s basketball team hasn’t had to really look up to any of its opponents this year.
It will Saturday night in the state Class 4A championship at 8 p.m. against Glen Mills.
With three of its top six players standing 6-7 or taller and two other reserves 6-5, the Battling Bulls have to rank as one of the state’s biggest entries.
The biggest Bulls in the starting lineup are 6-8 senior center Jay Thompson and 6-7 senior forward Chuck Robinson.
And the first player off the bench is 6-8 junior Alonzo Goldson.
Glen Mills, an all-boys school 25 miles from Philadelphia for youngsters who have run into trouble with the law, also has 6-3 junior Roy Bonuskey, who played at Greensburg Salem last season, and 6-0 junior Bob Couvillion in its starting five.
The only starter under six feet is 5-9 junior point guard Franklin Allen.
The Bulls’ seventh player is 6-0 senior Mike Epps.
“We’ve never battled size like this,” said Ringgold coach Phil Pergola, whose tallest starter is 6-5 senior Clay Wyne.
