To help families find something to do while social distancing, a local recreation commission is sponsoring a Valley-wide “egg”stravagant decorating contest.

The North Belle Vernon Recreation Commission said the event is intended to help relieve the burden families are facing as the coronavirus continues to spread.

“We are attempting to get people’s minds on something fun rather than the downer of the coronavirus,” Commission Chairman R.J. Sokol said. “We are hoping families can work on this project together, make things easier and nice and have fun during these tough times.”

The contest is open to all families and has no geographical boundaries. There is no fee to enter.

“We decided to keep the entrance fee at zero because a lot of people are losing their jobs and that hurts,” Sokol said.

The contest is not limited to traditional dyed eggs.

“Creativity is encouraged,” Sokol said. “The egg decorating contest could be making a costume, decorating a carton of eggs, a single plastic egg, hard-boiled egg or any type of egg any which way.”

Sokol said the hopes the contest brings joy during a tough time.

“This decorating contest was our best remedy for the Rec Commission to help the people of the Mon Valley busy themselves with a fun project,” he said. “Even if someone doesn’t receive the top votes, they will hopefully still have fun doing this with their family.”

The contest will run online on the NBV Community Bank Park Facebook page.

Families can decorate an egg together, or submit separate entries by posting individual photos of each egg to the Facebook page.

Photos can also be sent in through email to nbvpark@gmail.com.

Once photos are posted, people can “like” each picture to vote for their favorite.

The four highest vote getters will each receive a $25 gift card.

Photos must be emailed or posted to the Facebook page by 9 p.m. April 5. Voting will end at 5 p.m. April 11.
