Boys Coach of the Year: DiCenzo has Gladiators set for another deep playoff run

During preseason practices in November, the South Allegheny boys basketball team didn’t have to search far for motivation.

All players and coaches had to do was look up at the wall in the high school gym and see the one lone year adorned on the program’s section championship banner.

“Our goal from the beginning was to compete for the section. We have a banner in our gym that has one number from 23 years ago on it, so we always kinda used that for motivation,” South Allegheny head coach Tony DiCenzo said. “We knew we were going to have enough talent collectively to be in the conversation for our section.”

DiCenzo didn’t, however, envision his Gladiators having the type of success they did in his eighth season at the helm.

A year after taking its lumps on the way to winning just six games, SA proved to be the most dominant team in Section 3-3A, winning its first section title since 1997 with a perfect 12-0 record.
