With the high school wrestling season safely in the rear view mirror, the time has come to name the local all-stars and award winners for the 2019-20 season.

The Mon Valley Independent sports department is excited to announce the MVI-BeeGraphix Mat Warriors all-star team and award winners.

The awards are for co-wrestlers of the year, breakthrough wrestler of the year and coach of the year.

Co-wrestlers of the year

Frazier’s Thayne Lawrence and Elizabeth Forward’s Ryan Michaels could not have had more similar yet eye-popping performances on the mat this winter.

They both won section championships followed up with WPIAL titles. Both took home southwest region gold and both were state runners-up, losing in close, heartbreaking matches in the PIAA finals.

Both seniors were also chosen to represent the WPIAL in the prestigious Pittsburgh Wrestling Classic event, which was canceled due to the COVID-19 outbreak.
