Charleroi offering food delivery for elderly & disabled residents

Older residents in Charleroi who have a higher risk for contracting COVID-19 won’t have to worry about endangering their health to have food on the table.

A food delivery pilot program will begin Monday through a collaborative effort involving borough council, the mayor, administrative staff, the fire and street departments and a local grocery store.

Council President Mark Alterici said he brainstormed with council to find a way to help elderly residents stay safe and still have everything they need as more businesses are required to shut their doors.

Residents 65 and older and those who are disabled will be able to have groceries delivered to them by street department workers who are currently off the job.

The program will run for one week, but it could be extended as the need arises.

Charleroi firefighter and Emergency Management Coordinator Glenn Shipley said everyone involved was happy to step up to help.

“We got together and started thinking about our elderly residents and how they are getting what they need during this crisis,” Shipley said, “and wanted to find something we could do to help so they don’t have to worry about getting the food or medicines they need.”
