BVA softball preview

March 20, 2000

Belle Vernon Area High’s girls softball team had an impressive 1999 season until the final days.

After 14 games, the Lady Leps were 12-2 and appeared headed to a perfect record in Class AA’s Section 3.

BVA, however, ran into one of the area’s better pitchers in Charleroi’s Lauren Pieri and lost 4-1.

The Lady Leps finished  by losing three of their last four games, including a 2-1 upset at home to Steel Valley in the first round of the WPIAL playoffs.

Veteran BVA coach Lou Rood has done his best to avoid a repeat.

During the summer the Lady Leps played in a Laurel Highlands fast pitch league against strong competition.

“We ended up losing to Hempfield in the championship game,” noted Rood. “We played between 20 and 30 games. We gained a lot of confidence because most of the clubs we faced were all-star teams.”
