PIAA postpones Class 2A swimming & diving championships

Over the course of Thursday morning and afternoon, the athletes competing in today’s PIAA 2A boys and girls swimming and diving championships went through the gauntlet of emotions.

There was shock, surprise and disbelief, and then soon enough, reinvigoration.

Due to growing concern over the spread of Coronavirus, the PIAA Board of Directors decided Thursday morning to suspend the championships for at least two weeks.

Belle Vernon Area coach Rob Reda said his team has prepared and trained or months, hoping to see it’s hard work result in a championship.

To have it postponed, especially after he and his swimmers had already traveled to Bucknell, was disappointing, to say the least.

“We were up there having lunch, and then we saw things on twitter, and we were kind of in shock a little bit to think that the PIAA got canceled. It was just shock and disappointment but also understanding given what the situation is,” said Reda. “They were obviously disappointed. Everybody was ready for this meet. You plan this meet out since last May and then the next thing you know, the meet is canceled. It takes a lot of wind out of your sails. At the same time, you have to regroup and refocus.”
