The effect of the COVID-19 (coronavirus) is beginning to take its toll on local sports after a wave of cancellations and suspensions Thursday.

The PIAA announced Thursday it was suspending the PIAA basketball and Class 2A boys and girls swimming and diving championships.

“(The) PIAA, by enforcing a two-week hiatus from our basketball and AA swimming championships, believes this action will allow schools time to perform self-assessments and make decisions to promote optimal health conditions in their communities,” the organization said in an announcement sent to all member schools and posted on their website.

Locally, this affects the Thomas Jefferson girls basketball team, who defeated Woodland Hills Wednesday to advance to the PIAA quarterfinals where the Jaguars are scheduled to face Chartiers Valley for a fourth time. If the game takes place.

“The worst part right now is not really knowing much,” TJ head coach Lisa Fairman said. “I’m waiting to talk to (athletic director) Bill Cherpak, who has been in administration meetings all day.”
