In a 2-1 vote, the Washington Township board of supervisors hired a new police chief at Wednesday’s meeting.
Supervisor Jan Amoroso cast the lone no vote, while Supervisor Scott Hileman and Chairman Chuck Yusko voted yes to hiring Richard Taylor as the head of the police department.
“He’ll be starting now part-time until April 1, so he has time to give his other job notice and he’ll start here full time April 1,” Hileman said.
Prior to taking the vote, Amoroso said she wasn’t included in the interviewing process to find a new chief and asked Hileman several questions about the decision to hire Taylor.
She wanted to know how many people applied for the position. Hileman said there were six applicants.
She also wanted to know how many years of experience Taylor has had as a police officer.
Hileman said Taylor has been a law enforcement officer for more than 22 years. He said Taylor previously worked as a Washington Township officer for 11 years and that he has worked for Rostraver Township police for 11 years. He said Taylor is trained to work with K9s.
Amoroso also wanted to know how much Taylor is being paid.
Hileman said Taylor will earn $28 per hour, plus benefits, and that he’ll work 40 hours per week.
