Donora council won’t endorse skate park

Donora council does not plan to support a proposed skate park in the borough.

Chantal Bey, who founded Strive for a Better Tomorrow and the Strive and Thrive Center of Hope in Donora, approached the borough last month to talk about the project, but council was concerned that Bey was already collecting money for an idea that hadn’t been approved or planned.

Terri Petroske, borough administrator, told council in a work session last week that she reached out to the borough’s insurance company and learned “our general liability policy will skyrocket because of (a skate park).”

Petroske was quoted a price of $94 for every $1,000 of insurance with a minimum of $1 million in coverage — or $94,000 annually.

When Petroske talked to Bey about the cost, she said she could possibly get a grant to cover the fee for the first year.

“She has to get a committee together of people,” Councilman Donnie Pavelko said and Councilwoman Cindy Brice said, “She has to have a business plan.”
