It’s been quite the year for the South Allegheny boys basketball team.

The Gladiators, who won a section championship and advanced to the WPIAL Class 3A semifinals, added to their impressive campaign by earning their first trip to the PIAA playoffs.

SA achieved another first on Saturday as it rolled past District 10’s Franklin, 62-40, for the program’s first state playoff win in a first-round matchup at North Allegheny High School.

The Gladiators (24-2) were able to overcome a sluggish first half, as they played in their first game in nearly two weeks.

“A long layoff like that, I think it was 11 or 12 days, in the first half our shooting and our legs weren’t there,” said South Allegheny coach Tony DiCenzo. “We missed some open ones that we are accustomed to making, but we came out in the second half and put them away.
