Scoring 1,000 career points in less than two seasons doesn’t happen often at the high school level.
It’s so rare that even a veteran coach like Joe Salvino, who has over three decades of coaching experience, hasn’t seen it occur before.
That was, however, until the second-year Belle Vernon Area coach watched as standout sophomore Devin Whitlock joined the 1,000 point club in the Leopards’ 72-54 loss to Highlands in the WPIAL Class 4A championship game Saturday at the Petersen Events Center.
Whitlock, who poured in a game-high 25 points against the Golden Rams, reached the historic mark with a bucket early in the second quarter.
“Any time somebody has an accomplishment like that, it’s a great honor,” Salvino said. “This is a kid who coaches have relied on, knowing his ability. He has used that ability to do what he has had to do, and it’s not like he’s been selfish. Devin is not a selfish player, he just sees moments where he thinks he has to do certain things.”
