The NAACP McKeesport Unit celebrated Black History Month on Saturday with its annual pancake breakfast fundraiser.
McKeesport Councilwoman LuEthel Nesbit, who has been a member of the 60-year-old NAACP unit for 35 years, said the pancake breakfast has been a tradition for at least two decades.
Hundreds of people stopped by the Jacob Woll (Main) Pavilion in Renziehausen Park to eat breakfast foods such as blueberry pancakes and sausage and fruit cocktail, which were prepared by a team of longtime NAACP members who worked alongside National Honor Society students from McKeesport Area High School and a couple of students who study at Penn State Greater Allegheny.
NAACP member Monique Peterson said the event is important for the unit because money raised at the pancake breakfast is used to fund scholarships and other annual events and efforts. She thinks the breakfast ultimately serves an even greater purpose as a venue for fellowship.
Brenda Sawyer, president of the McKeesport Unit, agrees.
“We have this every year during Black History Month,” Sawyer said. “It’s a time for our community to come together.”
