California Area School District students set a record this year by raising more than $11,000 through a Pennies for Patients fundraiser.

From Feb. 3 to 21, students at the California Elementary/Middle School collected spare change, cash, checks and online donations for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, a nonprofit organization dedicated to finding cures for blood cancers.

Pennies for Patients helps students learn leadership, the importance of helping others and what they can do to save lives.

Through the program, students become members of a “Hero Squad” that works to “change cancer” through fundraising.
