Belle Vernon Area falls to Highlands in Class 4A title game

The Belle Vernon Area boys basketball team fell short in its quest for a WPIAL Class 4A championship as the sixth-seeded Leopards suffered a 72-54 loss at the hands of top-seeded Highlands Saturday at the Petersen Events Center.
BVA (19-7) held a 16-13 lead after the first quarter before being outscored, 59-38, in the final 24 minutes.
The Leopards were led by a game-high 25-point effort from sophomore Devin Whitlock, who reached the 1,000 point mark in his career with a bucket early in the second quarter. Mitch Pohlot had 10 points and Hunter Ruokonen finished with nine.
Highlands (22-3) was paced by Johnny Crise and his team-high 24 points. Korry Myers added 18 behind six 3-pointers and Antoine McDaniel chipped in with 13.
