A colorful sign now sits alongside Interstate 70 near the Smithton exit, calling attention to a tragic story.
Many who pass it might not realize the loss that caused the sign to be made, but Mon Valley residents will never forget Rostraver- West Newton Emergency Services Supervisor Matthew Smelser.
Smelser was killed Jan. 5 while responding to an accident on I-70. He was struck by a tractor trailer that lost control due to icy conditions after he got out of his ambulance to tend to a victim near the Smithton exit.
On Monday, first responders, colleagues and family gathered along the interstate where Smelser lost his life to watch the memorial be installed in his honor.
The sign was made by Michael Meloy, owner of Hell Town Concepts Signs-Banners & More. He was approached about creating a memorial sign about a week after his death.
