There no slowing down Belle Vernon Area’s Ian Shahan when he hits the pool, especially at Pitt’s Trees Hall in the WPIAL Class 2A championships.
The Leopards junior, who entered as the reigning WPIAL champion and record holder in the 100 butterfly, stole the show in his return to WPIALs by setting a new record in the event with a time of 49.02 to repeat as WPIAL champion. Two of his three career-best times in the butterfly have come at Trees.
“I love this pool, I’ve been swimming here for I don’t even know how long,” said Shahan. “When I started swimming this was a big spot for meets. There’s always added pressure where you don’t know if someone out of the blue might have a good day or you might end up having a bad day.”
Shahan nearly brought the Leopards’ 200 freestyle relay team back to win a thrilling race in the day’s final event, but BVA came up 1/100th of a second short of champion Riverside.
